With this review, I plan on covering my top 11 reasons why passengers cancel on Rideshare drivers, what exactly is a canceled ride request and how to prevent this from happening to you! Has anyone ever experienced trying to plan something in advance only to encounter an unexpected turn of events that completely derailed your intentions? Has anyone ever had to cancel a plan you may have made due to something else that you may have forgotten about? We all for the most part have right? I know I have! That’s because most of us don’t have or carry a crystal ball showing us the future of our plans actually going through the way we’d like them to go.
So it’s no real way to know if our plans that we’ve made are actually going to go through as planned until the plans are actually being executed! But too bad most people aren’t as understanding or don’t look at it this way. But hopefully I can change that with this short review. Especially if you want to be a top notch professional Rideshare driver like your fellow Rideshare Doc! From my almost 7 years of experience, I feel as though the best drivers are the ones who know how to listen and are understanding. I also feel like the best drivers are the ones who know how to put themselves in a passengers shoes. Are you ready for that?
Here at #1RideShareDoc, I’m all about sharing my personal story with you guys concerning this creepy Rideshare industry! I’m all about creating some sort of understanding, especially when it boils down to the things that you rarely hear drivers or passengers talking about. You know, like why passengers cancel on drivers either minutes before the Uber driver arrives or minutes after. Let’s discuss the things that these Rideshare companies aren’t talking about. Rideshare companies like Uber, Lyft, Via and Sidecar just to name a few. Allow me to prepare you for what’s ahead of you and more importantly behind you. Let’s get started!
This review will be divided into the following sections, for better absorption and clearer understanding purposes:

When A Passenger Cancels A Ride, What Exactly Does That Mean?
When a passenger cancels a ride, this literally means that the passenger doesn’t need what they originally ordered anymore. Simple as that! So due to a passenger not needing the ride that they may have ordered, they then have the option to cancel the ride. Sometimes riders can cancel their rides without penalty, depending on how long it’s been since they’ve ordered the ride and depending on if the driver has or hasn’t already arrived at their pickup location. But I’ll be getting more into details concerning that shortly!
How Much Time Does A Passenger Have To Come Outside?
When a passenger decides to order an Uber or Lyft ride for pickup and the Uber driver actually arrives at the pickup location on time, passengers have exactly 5 minutes to come outside. Not 6 minutes or 5 and a half minutes. Drivers have the option to continue waiting even though they’re not obligated to wait afterwards. After the 5-minute grace period has ended, passengers are then charged a cancellation fee if either they themselves cancel the ride or if their driver decides to cancel. There are actually three different time periods passengers are given depending on what type of ride they originally ordered. Those three types of rides are:
1.) Shared Rides: When a passenger orders a shared ride, the passengers are given 2 minutes to arrive to the driver’s vehicle before being charged the cancellation fee.
2.) Regular Rides (UberX/Lyft Standard): When a passenger orders a regular ride, passengers are given 5 minutes to arrive at the driver’s vehicle before being charged the cancellation fee.
3.) Reserved Rides: When a passenger orders a reserved ride, passengers are given up to 10 minutes (sometimes 20 minutes or longer!) to arrive at the driver’s vehicle before being charged the cancellation fee.
When Are Passengers Charged The Cancellation Fee?
Like I’ve just previously mentioned, passengers are given a certain amount of time to make it to a Rideshare drivers vehicle before the driver is given the option to cancel a ride request. That being said, passengers are charged a 5$, 7$, 10$ cancellation fee (sometimes more!) when they cancel during one of the following time periods:
1.) When The Driver Is Already On The Way: When a driver has already been in route towards the passengers pickup location for approximately 2 to 5 minutes.
2.) When A Driver Has Already Arrived: Whena driver has already not only arrived at the pick up location, but has already been driving for at least 2 min and sitting for at least 3 minutes at the pickup address.
What Are My Top 11 Reasons Why Passengers Cancel Ride Request?
I’ve decided to create my own short list on why I feel passengers cancel on drivers. I think I’ve talked to enough passengers and riders to understand fully why this happens (almost 40,000!). That said, when a passenger does decide to cancel a ride on an Uber driver, it could be for a multitude of reasons including:
1.) The Driver’s Late: Passengers may decide to cancel a ride due to a drivers expected arrival time becoming later than what was originally scheduled. So when choosing to become a Rideshare driver, always be sure to start heading towards your pickup location once you’ve accepted a ride!
2.) Really Long Wait Times: Having long wait times in my opinion would go hand and hand with drivers showing up late! The only difference is that the passenger may not ever have a chance to order or cancel a ride due to the timing being off all together!
3.) The Drivers Rating: Passengers may decide to cancel a ride they may have ordered due to an Uber rating or Lyft driver’s rating being low (4.70 or lower!). To prevent this from happening, always try to maintain a high rating by not only being hospitable to your passengers, but also being as safe as possible when driving.
4.) The Driver’s Car Wasn’t Big Enough: Riders may also decide to cancel a ride due to a drivers car not having enough space. But of course when it comes to the space that a Rideshare driver may have available in his or her vehicle, it’s up to the passenger to make sure that they’ve chosen the right size vehicle before placing their order. The right size vehicle for the amount of passengers or the right size vehicle for the amount of belongings that are also coming along for the ride.
5.) Prices Are Surging: Passengers may also decide to cancel a ride due to a sudden surging in pricing! There’s also no real way to prevent this from happening to a Rideshare driver unless the driver happens to be psychic or knows that the passenger plans on canceling the ride ahead of time. Passengers placing random ride requests until one of the ride requests matches their budget is more popular than most drivers think.
6.) Driver Isn’t Responding: Passengers may also decide to cancel a ride due to a driver being unresponsive. For a rideshare driver to prevent this from happening, always be sure to answer any text messages or phone calls that you may receive from your passenger. Communicating with your passengers could take you a long way literally!
7.) Alternative Transportation: Passengers may also decide to cancel a ride due to them finding an alternative form of transportation, which is also out of the Rideshare driver’s control! It is 100% the passengers responsibility to make sure that they’ve found a sufficient form of transportation before finalizing their decision to order an Uber or Lyft ride.
8.) Technical Issues: Passengers may also decide to cancel a ride due to having technical issues that they may be experiencing with the Lyft or Uber app itself. Especially when it comes to making a payment or understanding how much the rider may be paying before placing a ride request. This is something else that is completely out of the driver’s control!
9.) Change of Plans: Riders may also decide to cancel a ride due to having a sudden unexpected change in plans, destination or scheduling which is also out of the Rideshare driver’s control!
10.) Unexpected Emergencies: Passengers may also decide to cancel a ride due to having an unexpected personal or family emergency, which is also out of the Rideshare driver’s control!
11.) Worries Concerning Safety: Passengers may also decide to cancel a ride due to having safety concerns or uneasy feelings about the driver or the safety of the driver’s vehicle. To prevent this from happening, drivers should always not only make sure that they’re rider feel welcomed upon arrival, but also make sure that their vehicle is operating properly.
How To Prevent A Passenger From Canceling On The Driver!
Let me ease your worries right now by reminding you that there is no real way of preventing a passenger from canceling on the driver. Even if the driver performed every aspect of the job to the best of their ability, the passenger might still choose to cancel the ride for any given reason. That being said, create a game plan. Try to keep in mind to always do the right thing no matter what, even when things are out of your control because most of the time things will be. That way when a passenger does decide to cancel on you, understanding why won’t be an issue or your concern!
My Professional Conclusion
To conclude this short review, I would like to say to my Rideshare drivers to always keep my short list in mind on why a rider might cancel on a driver. Sometimes we all need to be reminded that it’s not our fault and that we did do the best we could to satisfy whatever or whomever we were trying to satisfy. Keep in mind that there’s no real possible way for a driver to go about forcing a passenger to not cancel a ride, nor should it be! Unexpected things happen all the time. That being the case, imagine for a second something unexpected happening in your life and you not being able to change something as simple as a ride request that you may have previously ordered.
Now that we’re at the end of another great review, I would love to know how you guys feel about why passengers cancel on Rideshare drivers? Do you believe that it’s fair for riders to be able to cancel when unexpected things happen? Do you think Rideshare drivers should have a say on when a passenger should be allowed to cancel a ride? Well whether you agree or disagree, I would love to hear what you think? If you have something that you would like to say or add to this short review, please feel free to leave those kind words at the bottom of this review and I will be sure to respond back to you promptly.
