With this review, I’ll be talking about Rideshare companies unmatching or unpairing riders with Rideshare drivers, what it means and why the rating system doesn’t work! Who really likes working with passengers or drivers they dislike or had a problem with in the past? Nobody for the most part right? Well that’s why these Rideshare companies put these rating systems in place. To ensure that no passenger or driver would have to go through the same bad experience twice! It’s supposed to be the better way of Uber and Lyft going about protecting everyone who’s using the platform. It just doesn’t work all the time which is very important that it does. Especially when you say that safety is your top priority!
Here at #1 RideShareDoc, I’m all about sharing my story and personal experiences with you concerning the Rideshare industry. All types of experiences including the goods, bad, highs and the lows lol. This platform was specifically created to give all passengers and drivers the support they need when it comes to learning, venting or simply sharing those personal experiences. Experiences that most drivers or passengers are too shy to talk about. Experiences that Rideshare companies like Uber, Lyft, Via or Sidecar don’t really care to talk or hear about. Please allow my website, my experiences and lessons to become your blessings! Now without further ado, let’s begin..
For a better understanding of what I’ll be covering today, this review will be broken down into the following sections:

What Does Unmatch/Unpaired Rider Mean?
When a driver is “unmatched” or “unpaired” from a passenger or a passenger is unmatched or unpaired from a driver, this is “supposed” to mean that you’ll never be paired with that particular person again. I said “supposed” because there’s certain ways that a person can end up getting the same passenger or driver again after being unmatched or unpaired, which I’ll explain in a little bit. But in the meanwhile, what I’ve just stated is what “unmatched” or “unpaired” is “supposed” to mean for all my readers who may not know!
More About The Rating System!
The rating system that was created by Rideshare companies like Lyft and Uber is literally the center connection piece to where drivers and passengers actually make matching and unmatching in the future possible! This system that is being used by these Rideshare companies involve the use of stars. Five stars to be more specific! And depending on how many stars a passenger or driver is rated with, they’ll be paired with that driver or passenger again in the future or they won’t be paired with them again in the future. Simple..
Why Is The Rating System Important?
This rating system was created to protect all Rideshare drivers and passengers from future bad encounters involving a driver or passenger. Especially when their previous encounter with the individual was unpleasant for whatever reason. That being said, the “protection system” could be another name for it! This protection or rating system is very important and is vital to every driver and passenger who uses the Uber and/or Lyft app. It’s also vital to a passenger or drivers needs, comfortably, piece of mind and safety! Safety should have actually been first lol! Or at least that’s what they say right lol.
How To Unpair A Rider From The Driver?
When a driver or passenger wants or needs to be unpaired from the other, the process is extremely easy. But before I explain the process, understand first that both the driver and the passenger have the ability to rate one another. I guess they had to make it fair somewhere right? That being said, if a driver had an unpleasant ride with a passenger or wanted to not be paired with that particular passenger again in the future, all that driver would have to do is give the passenger a three-star rating or lower and voila lol! You’ll never see that passenger again.
Giving anyone a rating of three-stars or below would disconnect the two from being paired again in the future. Or at least that’s what the rating system is supposed to do. But it doesn’t work every time for a few small reasons, which I’ll explain next! And when this “protection system” doesn’t work properly, let’s just say that your Rideshare career or experience can go from lovely to creepy in a matter of seconds. Imagine picking up or being picked up by someone who you’ve had a bad experience with in the past, just to have to deal with them again in the future. Having that thought alone makes me shake. Butit’s just the reality we all must face while using these Rideshare apps!
Why Does Unmatching or Unpairing Riders From The Drivers Work?
Unmatching riders from drivers or the other way around works for the most part. I know because after completing over 36,000 rides, your Rideshare doctor is still here to talk about it today lol! So it’s a very low chance that I’m going to see that bad passenger again after giving them a rating of three stars or lower. Or at least from my experience it is. It’s just not a 100% chance that I won’t see them again of course! Maybe a cool 70-85% chance due to my personal experience of me getting a passenger that I rated three stars in the past, but not 100%. So again from my experience, I guess you could say that the “protection system” works sometimes and sometimes it doesn’t, which I’ll explain why in the upcoming section.
Why Does Unmatching Riders With Drivers Not Work?
1.) Computers Aren’t Perfect!:
Matching and unmatching riders with drivers through the “rating system” can be effective. But it can also have it’s shortcomings too, which vary depending on the situation. One typical situation where the rating system falls short is when the Uber or Lyft system takes time to update your ratings concerning the other party. And in cases where the system fails to recognize your ratings entirely could result in you being matched with the same driver or passenger twice, which could be bad!
In other words you’ll be getting that same passenger or driver again as if rating them with a three-star rating or below meant nothing. But computers aren’t perfect right? What is perfect anyway? I can’t give you one example other than God lol! So with that being said, this would be another reason why Rideshare driving would never be considered to be safe in my book. But there are more reasons why this rating or protection system doesn’t work as well as it should. Or at least not all the time, which is all it would take to put yourself in danger!
2.) People Creating New Accounts:
Let me reiterate that unmatching or unpairing passengers from drivers or vice versa using the “protection or rating system” works and also doesn’t work depending on the scenario. That being said, this next scenario involves two parties being unpaired from one another (for whatever personal reasons!). But in this scenario, one of the parties decided to create a brand new account! This example pertains more to the passenger and not the driver.
I say that because drivers have to provide Uber and Lyft with lots of confidential details making it harder for us to create a second driver account. Passengers on the other hand are presented with the complete opposite! Since these Rideshare giants care more about the money over anything else, they only require the passenger to technically provide them with a secure way to make their payments. Everything else doesn’t matter. Everything else including providing the passengers real name, a real picture or photo ID and a background check.
All the passengers would technically have to do to create a new account and bypass the rating system, is create a new account with a new or altered name and a new form of payment! Oh, and don’t forget to load a picture of something random other than a picture of your face, which these companies also allow passengers to do. To finish up my point, it’s more common for passengers to create a new account when they’ve had their account completely shut down or when their trying to bypass the rating system. Just another reason why these Rideshare “unmatch” rating systems don’t work!
3.) Ordering Rides For Others: This last one would explain why the rating system will more than likely never work when it comes to protecting the drivers who depend on it. It’s because you have current passengers allowing ex-passengers who have been banned to take their seats! How can a passenger who’s breaking the rules ever be banned from using a service when they’ll always have another passenger allowing them to take their place? This may be another good reason why the rating system these Rideshare companies put in place will never work 100%!
The Dangers Of Picking Up The Same 3 Star Passengers!
Continuing on from the previous section, when a passenger does create their new account (which the Rideshare companies allow!) or has another passenger who has an account in good standings order them a ride, this would mean that every driver that gave that particular passenger a 3 star rating or lower (for safety concerns or being disrespectful for example!), would have a high chance of getting that same passenger again. The same goes for every driver that particular passenger rated poorly! See how dangerous riding or working for these companies can be? And the only chance a passenger or driver would have at not running into that person again, is to remember them.
But who’s really going to remember somebody that they just met and only spent a few minutes with? Keep in mind that we’re talking about a passenger or driver remembering a complete stranger they’ve never talked to or seen ever in their life except for maybe that one time! And a lot of us have bad memory. I know for a fact I do! A stranger, driver or passenger can actually set you up (at the drop off destination for example!), when a stranger remembers you and you don’t remember them! Creepy, creepy, creepy!
My Suggestions For Improving The Rating/Protection System!
To be totally honest like I always try to be, there is no real way (I would say!) of improving or tightening up these Rideshare services rating systems! The most these Rideshare companies might be able to do is update and improve the speed of their computer systems. In other words, improve the rating systems reaction time when it comes to the “unpairing process” itself! So when a passenger or driver does rate the other party with a three-star rating or lower, the “unpairing process” could go into effect instantly! That’s all I would recommend sadly.
And I use the term “sadly” because in all actuality, as long as a passenger has the ability to create a new account, under a new or altered name and new payment details, no driver will ever be safe when referring to this so called “protection systems”! Not to mention the fact that that particular banned individual could always get one of their family members to order them a ride, which then leaves the chances open once again for that driver who rated them poorly, to get them again!
And speaking of allowing passengers to use other passenger’s accounts, the majority of the time when a driver is picking up someone other than what the Lyft or Uber app is actually showing, the account holder who actually ordered the ride doesn’t say anything to the driver! In other words, the driver is expecting to pick up a woman by the name of Becky. But instead of Becky walking to the car, it’s her jailbird cousin Scrappy who’s just coming home from prison. Again, creepy, creepy, creepy!
My Professional Conclusion Concerning This Rating System!
In conclusion, I think I’ve made my point when it comes to why these rating systems work and why they don’t work. If I could use percentages to compare the fact that the protection system works to it not working, I would have to say 70/30. These Rideshare companies rating systems protect their drivers and passengers roughly 70% of the time, while the other 30% of the time the complete opposite. And it’s not just because of them having a poor protection system either!
It’s also because of the fact that passengers can create a brand new account and/or order random people or family members rides (who could have been banned!). And this is all happening without telling the Rideshare driver or the company anything! But this is the reality that we all must live in as Rideshare drivers and passengers, when it boils down to using these types of services. But not to worry! The Rideshare Doc is here to keep you guys aware of the little things that these companies don’t talk about, that can make a big difference in your life. Your not alone anymore..
I think that sums it up for this article guys! Now it’s time for you guys to express yourselves and let me know what’s on your minds. Do you have anything that you would like to add or say concerning why these rating systems don’t work that wasn’t mentioned within this review?
